Procedure of Use Kavalai is an irrigation system powered by animals, in which bullocks are used for drawing water from wells. However, the bullocks tend to become weak when employed regularly for such heavy workloads. In order to revive the bullock, the farmer employs a tonic, in which the bark of the plants vengai(Pterocarpus marsupium), 100-year old neem(Azadirachta indica) tree, and velvelam(Acacia leucophloea) are soaked in water for a week till a beer-like smell emanates from the solution. Then black cumin and palm jaggery are added to this solution and the mixture administered orally to the bullock for three days.
