Prabhubhai Naranbhai Rohit from the Bodal village in the Borsad taluka in Kheda district in Gujarat makes use of the swallow wart(Calotropis gigantea) and Babul tree (Acacia nilotica) for leather tanning. Leather tanning and trading is a traditional business for some village communities.Rohit’s family was involved in this business for years but he has now abandoned it and has taken to farming. He used to treat raw leather to soften it. A special site called kund (tank) for processing leather is found many villages. It is normally isolated from the rest of the village.
Rohit adds a glassful of latex of swallow wart in the kund which is filled with 100 to 150 litres of water. Then he adds small pieces of the bark and trunk of Babul tree. He immerses raw leather in it and turns it over everyday and keeps it soaked for about one and a half months. Once the leather is removed from the tank, it is cleaned in water.

Small fibers on the inner side of the processed (ripened) leather are scraped away with a knife and it is again washed and cleaned in water. Salt is dusted on the surface and it is kept in the sun-light for three days for drying. This process improves the texture and colour of leather. Sometimes tanners smear a little oil of Indian beach (Pongamia pinnata)</b> seed on the leather to make it shine.

Approximately 30 to 40 kilogrammes of raw leather can be processed simultaneously. According to Dr Jayvir Anjaria, Babul tree contains tannin which is used in leather tanning. |
