Sudden onset, Biphasic Fever , immidiate drop in milk production, depression, stiffness, lameness, nasal/ocular discharges, cessation of rumination, constipation and abortion |
| Disease Description |
It is an arthropod transmitted disease of cattle and water buffalo that spans tropical and subtropical zones of Africa , Australia, the middle east and Asia. From the enzootic sites the disease extends intermittently into temparate zones, causing epizootics of variable severity. The disease has not been reported in North or South America or in Europe. Several closely related viruses can infect cattle, but do not cause disease. |
| Disease Control |
Disease control by control of arthropods, mosquitos and culicoid midges. |

| Procedure of Use |
Rhabdo virus causes a fever that is known as valoby the locals. The cattle have typical symptoms like very high temperature for three days. The area around the nose (muzzle) of the animal becomes dry. It is usually moist in healthy ones. The muscles of the hind limbs and fore limbs become weak because of which the animal is not able to stand. The animal keeps on shifting its weight from one foot to another and constantly limps while walking.
This ephemeral fever also affects the milk production of milch cattle. By fourth day the virus completes its incubation period and the fever subsides.
Amaruben H Baurya from the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat has formulated a treatment to cure this fever. She makes the animals inhale the fumes of shisham or Rose-wood (Dalbergia sissoo)wood to make it comfortable. Besides this, Baruya crushes about 100 grams of garlic Allium sativum) pods and smears on the animals body, twice a day, for two days. This causes the ephemeral fever to subside faster. |
| Etiology Causative Agent |
