Procedure of Use Newborn calves of cows and buffaloes are prone to get infected at their umbilicus. This happens due to contamination at the time severing the umbilical cord from the mother. When the umbilicus gets infected, the wound attracts flies, which makes the swelling increase. The calf suffers severe pain and may die if not taken care of. Darbar has learnt an inexpensive traditional practice from his parents to save the infected calf. Mix a couple of pinches of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) snuff in a fistful of ash obtained by burning cowdung cake. Add human urine to make this into a thick paste and dry in sun. Powder the cake obtained thus and sprinkle on the swollen umbilicus. Done thrice a day for a few days will heal the wound and the swelling subsides.
