Several mahua products are used to feed livestock. Leaves, flowers and fruits are lopped to feed goats and sheep (Singh et al., 2008). The mahua oil cake (usually called mahua seed cake in India) is used for ruminants in areas where mahua oil production is important, but is generally considered detrimental to livestock performance due to its high saponin content (Singhal et al., 1986). Spent flowers, the by-product of alcohol production, are also occasionally fed to livestock (Reddy et al., 1966).

"Heavy consumption of leaves of sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) or castor (Ricinus communis) causes bloat in animals. Bloat leads to the bulging of the para-lumbar fossa and a tympanic sound is heard on the auscultation of fossa. The animal suffering from bloat becomes anorectic and restless and bellows frequently. Bloat should be cured at the earliest, or otherwise it may cause death of the animal. To treat the condition, Jaiswal Shalikaram uses the juice of flowers of mahuva (Madhuca indica). The juice, which is said to be intoxicating for humans, should be administered orally to the animal. Shalikaram has an alternative method to treat bloat. He uses a mixture of tamarind (Tamarindus indica ) and jaggery which is fed to the animal. Both methods cure bloat in head of cattle. Mahuva tree (Madhuca indica ) is mostly found in sandy soils. It has rounded fruits, which are used as medicine." |
