Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs
Disease Description Bloat is a seasonal problem in both dairy and beef cattle. The condition is usually precipitated by the rapid consumption of lush legume pasture species (especially clover and lucerne) in spring. Procedure of Use "An Animal suffering from bloat typically shows symptom like swelling of the abdomen and an inclination to lie down on its side. On occasions, if the pain increases, the animal may also moan loudly. The problem is caused by excessive feeding of green fodder or decaying grain. To remove the bloat, the Dangis collect one of the wildly growing five leaf yam (Dioscorea pentaphylla) plants from a forest and feed it to the animal once a day. According to them this technique is a traditional practice of theirs which they picked up from their forefathers and has been in use for the last 10 years."
