Disease Description |
Bloat is a form of indigestion marked by excessive accumulation of gas in the rumen. Immediately after cattle consume a meal, the digestive process creates gases in the rumen. Most of the gases are eliminated by eructation (belching). Any interruption of this normal gas elimination results in gas accumulation or bloat.

Procedure of Use |
Symptoms of bloat in animal : reduced feed intake, distension of the abdomen, frothing from mouth, increased respiration and stiff muscles. The starved and weak animal are more susceptible to bloat. This occurs if the animal eats excessive quantity of castor (Ricinus communis) leaves and husk, unripe sorghum (Sorghum vulgare) or tender lucerne (Medicago sativa). For treatment of this condition, the keeper first applies common salt on the back of the animal. He then makes a liquid mixture by mixing 250 g ghee (clarified butter), 100 g jaggery and 20 g balsam (Impatiens balsamina) seeds and drenches two tubeful measure of the mixture to the smaller animal and three tubeful measure to the bigger animal. Due to this the animal gets relief from bloat in one hour. He is using this method for over 8 years and learnt it from his parents. |
