"Bharwad has learnt from elders in the village that it is always better to treat bloat promptly. The remedy consists of boiled groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and plain water. Heat about 50 millilitres of groundnut oil and bring to a boil. Poured into a tall vessel containing about 250 millilitres of water. When the mixture cools down, stir it well and drench to the afflicted animal. This brings almost instantaneous relief from bloat." |

Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs |
|
Disease Description |
Bloat is a form of indigestion marked by excessive accumulation of gas in the rumen. Immediately after cattle consume a meal, the digestive process creates gases in the rumen. Most of the gases are eliminated by eructation (belching). Any interruption of this normal gas elimination results in gas accumulation or bloat.

Procedure of Use |
To blot out bloat in an animal, Nanubhai Chaudhary seeks to smoke out gas in the belly of the buffalo. He takes dry wood of sisoo (Dalbergia sissoo) and burns it. This is a self developed practice of Nanubhai. Alternatively, the grandmothers cure of castor (Ricinus communis) oil is administered. This subsides bloat an animal suffers from bloat due to excessive eating of green grass or lucern. The symptoms are it stops ruminating. Its abdomen sounds like a drum when tapped with hand.
