Disease Symptoms / Clinical Signs
Disease Description Retained placenta (RP) is also known as retained foetal membrane or retained cleansing. RP occurs when the calf’s side of the placenta (the fetal membranes) fails to separate from the mother’s side. Separation of the membranes normally occurs after the calf is born (early separation is one cause of stillbirth). RP is usually defined as the failure to expel fetal membranes within 24 hr after parturition. (https://www.thecattlesite.com/diseaseinfo/232/retained-placenta/)

Precautions
Procedure of Use After parturition, if the animal does not expel the placenta in time or if retention is prolonged, it may have adverse effect on the health of the cow or buffalo which may become restless. The animal may not conceive again. It may die even. The placenta should ideally be expelled within four to six hours of parturition. Otherwise the retained placenta can pose danger to the life of the animal, including womb infections. To overcome this problem, 500 gram jaggery is dissoved in water and drenched to the affected animal. In addition to this, one to one-and-a-half kilogram of grains of pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides) are steam boiled and fed to the affected animal. This helps expulsion of placenta within a short time."
