Cow/buffalo undergoes a lot of stress while calving, therefore, the animal should be given light, palatable, mild laxative ration containing warm rice gruel, boiled rice/ wheat bran, boiled millet or wheat mixed with edible oil, bypass fat, Jaggery, Soya, Asafoetida, Methi, Black Cumin, ginger etc. for 2 to 3 days after calving. This kind of diet is also helpful in early expulsion of placenta. (Nutritional Care After Calving, https://www.nddb.coop/farmer/animal-nutrition/nutritional-care-after-calving ) |

| Procedure of Use |
"If a cow does not spontaneously discard her placenta after calving, Sitapara feeds her a solution containing two drops of milk from crown flower plant (Calotropis gigantea) to prevent complications from the retention of placenta. In one litre of water, mix about 20 grams of tea (Camellia sinensis) dust, 200 grams of jaggery and 300 grams of pounded green grass. Heat this mixture till it comes to boil. Add just two drops of the latex of crown flower plant. Continue boiling till the volume of the solution becomes half of the original and cool it.Drench the solution to the cow through a drenching tube. She promptly discards the placenta." |

|
| Global Context |
Retained placenta is most commonly associated with dystocia, milk fever (metabolic diseases) and twin births. In most herds with good management these causes make up the majority of known risk factors for retained placenta.
