Procedure of Use An improved sowing implement devised in Ahmedabad is useful for sowing groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) and pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) systematically in straight rows. The implement is a simple hand tool that can also be used for other crops like sesame (Sesamum indicum), pearl millet ( Pannisetum typhoides) and black gram (Vigna mango) with equal efficacy. According to Shekhat, using this implement lets the farmer accomplish sowing in five bighas (slightly more than one hectare) of land within an hour without having to use a pair of bullocks as usual. The implement is a boon to farmers with meagre land holding as they can do away with bullocks and save the heavy expenditure on fodder that entails. Proper sowing in straight rows reduces the workload during weeding operation. Requirement of water for the crop also is reduced significantly when the sowing is with correct gaps between rows that are straight. In short, the simple implement significantly improves overall productivity.
